As I mentioned above, Homeaglow is a platform for finding independent cleaners, while Molly Maid sends their own employees. There are pros and cons with both approaches.
Homeaglow’s Process
Homeaglow connects you with independent cleaners who list their own availability and set their own rates. You browse cleaner profiles, read reviews, and book directly through the site.
You never have to wait for a phone call to get a quote, and there’s no separate head office that you have to contact when you have questions. Everything from pricing to scheduling happens through the Homeaglow website.
The cleaners are independent contractors rather than Homeaglow employees, which means you’re building a direct relationship with the cleaner or cleaners coming to your home.
Anytime you want to change something related to your cleaning, it’s as simple as messaging your cleaner or asking them while they’re working at your home.
Molly Maid’s Process
Molly Maid is a franchise-based cleaning company. You contact your local office to get started, and after going through the quote process, they dispatch trained teams of two cleaners to your home on your agreed-upon schedule.
Corporate headquarters sets standards for training and cleaning methods, but your experience is impacted largely by the location nearest you and its policies.
One additional (and rather unique) benefit of Molly Maid is that it’s part of the Neighborly family of home service companies.
Anytime you need multiple home services like HVAC, plumbing, or electrical repairs, Neighborly’s app lets you find and schedule partner brands all in one place, including Molly Maid.
But unlike Homeaglow, you can’t work out details with your cleaner directly. You have to contact the local office or use the Neighborly app.
Pricing and How to Find out What You’ll Pay
Since the way each company operates is so different, I wasn’t surprised to discover there’s also a major difference between what each one charges and how they put together the initial quote.
Homeaglow’s Pricing
Homeaglow requires you to join their $59/month ForeverClean membership to access discounted hourly rates starting at $20 per hour. The membership also has a six-month minimum commitment.
You might also be familiar with the $19 introductory cleaning that Homeaglow is well-known for. That offer is tied to this membership, meaning if you cancel before completing six months, you’ll be charged the full price of that first cleaning, which typically runs ~$150 to ~$200.
For my home, two four-hour sessions per month at $20 per hour comes to $160 in cleaning fees plus the $59 membership, or ~$219 per month.
Molly Maid’s Pricing
Molly Maid prices by the job rather than by the hour. Your quote depends on your location, cleaning frequency, home size, number of pets, and a few other details.
The general range is anywhere from about $250 for smaller homes to $450 for mid-to-large-size homes, though that number can shift significantly based on what your local office decides to charge.
Getting a quote almost always means scheduling an in-home walkthrough first, which made me anxious. But the appointment itself is low-pressure and typically runs 15 to 30 minutes. You’ll walk through your cleaning preferences, discuss any special requests, and ask your questions, with no obligation to book afterward.
It’s a reasonable process, all things considered, but it kind of irks me to not even be able to get a ballpark estimate from the website.
Cleaner Consistency
To be clear, what we’re evaluating here is how often I was able to get the same cleaner or team of cleaners. In my experience, getting a consistent clean every single visit comes down to working with people who know the details of your home.
Homeaglow’s Consistency
With Homeaglow, you decide who comes to your home. You browse cleaner profiles, read reviews, and choose the person who seems like the right fit.
Once you find someone you like, you can rebook that same cleaner for every visit so they learn your space, your preferences, and the things that matter most to you. Anytime they can’t make it, you can choose to reschedule with them, or try someone else.
Either way, you always know exactly who is coming to your home.
You also have the freedom to offer specific supplies or equipment if, for example, you have any delicate surfaces in your home. I appreciated not having to cross my fingers and hope their supplies would be safe!
Molly Maid’s Consistency
Molly Maid sends teams of two trained cleaners who bring their own supplies, equipment, and vacuum to every visit. They specifically promote the use of high-quality vacuums and microfiber cloths rather than paper-based materials, which they say pick up significantly more bacteria.
If you’d prefer they use specific products in your home, you can make the request, but it’s handled on a location-by-location basis and tends to involve a fair amount of coordination with the local office.
Still, there’s no guarantee you’ll see the same cleaners from visit to visit. Their training is standardized, which helps, but the people can and do change!
What Happens When You Have an Issue
Both services have a satisfaction process in place, which I love to see. But they’re very different, and it’s important you understand each process before you choose one of these companies.
Homeaglow’s Happiness Guarantee
Homeaglow’s is called the Happiness Guarantee, and it runs in three stages:
- If you’re unhappy with a clean, reach out to your cleaner directly to work out a resolution, such as a touch-up visit or a partial refund.
- If you can’t reach an agreement, you file a formal support request through Homeaglow’s dashboard within 72 hours of the cleaning. Your cleaner then has seven days to accept or decline.
- If they decline or don’t respond, you escalate to Homeaglow, who reviews what happened and makes a final decision. That decision can be a full refund, a partial refund, or no refund, depending on the circumstances.
It’s a multi-step process that takes time, and there’s no guarantee you’ll walk away with money back. But I appreciate knowing that Homeaglow will step in and resolve it, regardless of what the cleaner does.
Molly Maid’s Neighborly Done Right Promise
Molly Maid offers the Neighborly Done Right Promise:
- You contact your local office by the end of the next business day following your cleaning.
- They’ll send someone back to redo anything that wasn’t right at no charge.
But in my experience, the major catch here is that the process depends entirely on your local office engaging with you.
I found out that I’m not the first customer who tried to report a problem and was basically ghosted by my local office for days. So, while the guarantee exists, it’s sometimes hard to get someone on the phone.
Scheduling and Flexibility
It’s probably no surprise at this point, but scheduling and flexibility were yet another area where these two companies have completely different policies!
Homeaglow’s Flexibility
With Homeaglow, everything runs through the website. You book when you want, adjust your schedule as needed, and manage it all without picking up the phone.
Canceling or rescheduling a single cleaning visit is free as long as you do it at least six hours before your appointment starts. Cancel within that six-hour window, and there’s no refund, however.
As for the ForeverClean membership, as I mentioned, you’ll be charged the full price for your discounted introductory clean if you cancel before six months. After six months, it becomes a month-to-month membership with no cancellation fees.
Molly Maid’s Flexibility
Molly Maid asks for at least 72 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. If something unavoidable comes up last minute, they’re generally understanding, but it depends on your local office’s policies.
More importantly, across all locations, there’s no contract and no early termination fee for canceling the service altogether! You can stop at any time.
That’s amazing to me because it’s not the norm in this space. Some cleaning services give you a better price if you commit to a full year, which forces you to decide how much you trust a company before you’ve had a chance to try them.
How to Choose Between Homeaglow and Molly Maid
When comparing Homeaglow vs. Molly Maid, the right fit depends entirely on what you prioritize most when it comes to cleaning, because these two options solve different problems.
If “convenience,” for you, means web-based, no phone calls, and full control over who comes into your home, Homeaglow is still the better fit. You manage your schedule on your own terms, and the person cleaning your home is someone you chose and can rebook directly.
If “convenience,” for you, means handing the whole thing off and not thinking about it, Molly Maid is the way to go. You request a quote, get set up with your local office, and from there, the company manages the logistics. You have no membership to track and aren’t expected to manage your cleaner.
If keeping costs down is your priority, I’d say Homeaglow is the stronger choice for regular recurring cleaning. Once the membership is factored in, the effective cost per session is significantly lower than what most quote-based services charge. I can say from experience that the $59/month membership pays for itself pretty dang fast.
If consistency is your top priority, the answer depends on what consistency means to you. If it’s the same person learning your home and your habits over time, Homeaglow makes that easy. If it’s a trained team following a standardized process every visit regardless of who shows up, Molly Maid is designed for that.
My Final Recommendation
The Homeaglow vs. Molly Maid decision comes down to how involved you want to be in managing your cleaning service.
If you want to choose your cleaner(s), handle everything through the web portal, and get the best rate for regular bookings, Homeaglow is the ideal pick.
If you’d rather work with a cleaning company that manages the scheduling, requires no contract, and allows for easily finding other home service professionals through the Neighborly family of companies, Molly Maid is worth going through the quote process for.
Ultimately, neither of these services is “better” or “worse” than the other. Take some time to think through your priorities, and the best option for your home will quickly become clear!
